We, the prisoners who live and die like animals in this prison – warehouse for humans, want to report those who created these prisons and firstly the former Minister of Justice Charalambos Athanasiou, as the most accountable. These gentlemen spent huge amounts of money, specifically on electronic surveillance and over-equipped specialized police units to guard the prison perimeter, but they have criminally neglected our lives and health. They did not take into account their own laws, the penal code and the internal regulations which prescribe that medical and pharmaceutical care must be made available to all prisoners.

Thus, there is neither a doctor nor nurses and there is even lack of social services in Domokos prison. So, maybe the Greek legislation does not entail a death sentence but inside these prisons the death sentence is enforced in practice.

Today at the break of dawn, at 4am, another prisoner lost his life, his name was Mezas Alkiviades, he was 52 years old and was incarcerated in the ward D2. Since noon, he had been asking to see a doctor, the doctor we never had in this prison.

For this death, which could have been prevented, we consider responsible, apart from the political regime of the Ministry of Justice, the manager Th. Kostaras and the attorney Theologhetes for failing to initiate a timely transfer of the prisoner to the hospital. This death constitutes yet another addition to a long list of prisoner deaths, more recent of which was Manolis Ghalanis, who died two months ago and was also confined in ward D2.

We call on Minister of Justice Nikos Paraskevopoulos to make a public commitment that there is going to be 24-hour medical care in prison. Futhermore, we request that he visits these prisons in order to ascertain himself their tragic and criminal insufficiencies.

Until then, we declare our denial to enter our cells and our intent to abstain from any meals provided in prison.

Thus, there is neither a doctor nor nurses and there is even lack of social services in Domokos prison. So, maybe the Greek legislation does not entail a death sentence but inside these prison walls the death sentence is enforced in practice.
