Angeliki Spyropoulou: an insurgent anarchist woman on hunger strike

The statement below was written by Angeliki Spyropoulou, a 22 year-old university student and current hunger striker in prison. The hunger strike has lasted two weeks so far and poses a significant threat to the inmates’ lives according to doctors’ reports. Various organizations declared their solidarity with the hunger strikers, such as the Initiative for Prisoners Rights and The International Society for Ethical Psychology and Psychiatry. Activists declared their solidarity in various ways, including the occupation of the Law School of the University of Athens and the squatterdom of formal offices of the ruling party, Syriza.

The following statement was originally published on InterArma:

For the past two months, after the revelation of the plans to escape made by members of the Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei, a witch hunt has begun towards all directions. Since my arrest and thereafter the situation is out of control with the hounds of the anti-terror police violating every boundary. Apparently, the continuous and unregretful activities of certain people, obstinately denying to acknowledge the power of the prison guard locking them away night after night, has infuriated those unable to understand what it means to live a life of pride and dignity. Those who openly aligned against them no longer suffice, they now target people who are not politically related to us, individuals who chose not to give up on their own people and not to turn their back on those on the run. As dirty as they play, they still can’t break us. After their every attack we are going to backlash with our heads high. We are not characterized by idleness and passivity.

Since March the 2nd, I participate in the hunger strike along with the comrades of the Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei- Prison Nucleus, demanding the release of the mother of Christos and Gherasimos Tsakalos as well as the girlfriend of the latter. We are determined to take this to the end.

WE WON’T STEP BACK

P.S. There is much to be said, but, it is important for someone to have the ability to evaluate the nature of circumstances and what matters the most now is the immediate release of those unrelated to this case. Now, the rest can wait. For the time being, the only thing I have to say is that this is not the beginning and definitely not the end of a story, but merely part of a journey and this where the beauty of it lies.
